Skipper Lacrosse Sweep the Trojans

This past Thursday night, the girls’ Skipper lacrosse team held to their home-field advantage by defeating Wayzata 16 to 8. This game was visibly different than past games this season. The Skippers were sharp and fast last week.

Four-year varsity returner and senior captain Maddie Hawley talked with us about her thoughts on the game. “We worked together as a team which we haven't done very well in past games...We connected our passes and really played a team game, rather than an individual game, which put us above Wayzata,” said Hawley. Hawley says that junior midfield Ellie Dulac and sophomore attack Avery Wolf were both crucial parts in last night's victory. “Ellie was a leading force on transition and Avery was leading on attack, both of them scored multiple times,” Hawley shared.

With a 6 and 4 record, the Skippers look forward to hosting Blake tonight, and hope to hand them their second loss of the season. “We will need to continue to play as a team with extra discipline and composure to dominate [each] possession of the game,” Hawley says in preparation for tonight’s game.

A Night to Remember

Getting ready for prom is a not a sprint but a marathon. Booking appointments months in advance left and right for a spray tan, nails, hair, and brow waxes; anything to make a girl feel and look 100%.  To get appointments is a race against time. You have to consider all of the other proms in your area to battle the wait times and appointment times not being available. The week leading up to prom consists of pampering yourself up until the day of. The day of prom will be a sprint running from appointment to appointment; racing the clock to get ready in time for your pictures.

Sherri Hill… every girls dream dress. But wait, they're anywhere from $300-700! This is why most girls choose to shop elsewhere, such as Nordstrom's, Macy's, Opitz, or online to Prom Girl or Lulu’s. Girls might also choose to borrow a dress from an older girl or a friend! Finding the perfect dress takes a lot of time (usually more than one trip to the mall), and more often than not it will have to be altered as well. Prom dresses are mostly long elegant dresses, but as the years go on they are starting to have more edge. Whether that means a two piece dress that shows a girl's midsection, a leg cut out, or even some girls go with the short dress for prom now. It may be a long process, but in the end… the dress is a make or break! 

Finding a place to hold 30+ people and their families for pictures can be a challenge. This is why most prom groups tend to find somewhere other than your typical backyard. Popular places for pictures in the Minnetonka-Minneapolis area are Lake Harriet Band Shell, Excelsior Commons, The Stone Arch Bridge, and The Arboretum. Not only is it a struggle to find a place, but once you get there the chaos begins. Everyone is scrambling to get pictures with all of their friends before their party bus, limo, etc. comes to pick them up. Group picture… oh what a horrible idea. First, because organizing that many people to pose and smile together is simply a lost cause. Second, I don't think anyone actually uses the group picture to post besides on Facebook. Lastly, the pictures are so far away that you can barely even see your own face!

Finding the perfect place for dinner?  Let’s not forget all of the things to consider when finding the right place.  If you have a group with over 20 people, finding a place that will accommodate everyone can be daunting.  Often times you have to call months ahead to book a restaurant when your group hasn’t even formed.  Not to mention finding a place that’ll have something everyone can eat (I’d recommend an American place) inside everyone’s budget is just as difficult. Most groups this size book months in advance or know the manager of a restaurant that will make an exception for a large group.  Hibachi, Crave, and the Newsroom are all popular choices for Minnetonka students because they accept large reservations and serve good food.  In all honesty, it doesn’t matter where you go, as long as they’re willing to accommodate plenty of people.  
The dance is where all this preparation and drama truly pays off. This once a year fantasized night has been a tradition in high schools for generations. Finding the perfect dress, the most handsome date, and just feeling on top the world only happens because of this event that started out as a small high school night in a gymnasium. High schools now, like Minnetonka, host their proms at nightclubs, landscape arboretums, and fancy hotels downtown. Students are dispersed into friend groups for pictures and dinner, but the dance is the time where the whole school can come together to be united as one.

New Captain America Crushes the Box Office

Marvel Cinematic Universe came out with the third installment in the Captain America movie series. This movie was widely anticipated around the world. It was released on May 6th, and box office sales totaled at 179,139,142 on opening weekend alone. 

The plot follows Captain America (Chris Evans) as political tensions rise between him and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). The cast includes many classic members of the Avengers including Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olson), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), and others. New to the Avenger's cast were Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), and Spider-Man (Tom Holland). The addition of Ant-Man and Spider-Man to the films added a new sense of quirky humor while the Black Panther helped deepen the plot.

Overall, the plot was entertaining and kept the audience engaged. The movie does not just revolve around action, and instead follows characters' personal dilemmas and thoughts throughout the film. As always, Marvel adds a touch of humor to make the dark spots in the movie a little lighter. The movie would be recommended to action movie fans, especially those who are familiar with other Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies.

2010 Minnetonka Football Star Goes Pro

In an era where the term student-athlete is shoved down the throats of collegiate athletes, Beau Allen is a blast from the past. Beau Allen was the starting nose tackle as a freshman at Minnetonka High School. He played four years of varsity football and excelled academically at one of the toughest schools in Minnesota. Beau had numerous offers coming out of high school, but choosing Wisconsin wasn't too tough of a decision.

"I have a lot of family ties there. My uncle played football [at Wisconsin], so I watched a lot of Badgers games growing up...Also I really liked the business school...[and I] wanted to go into business after high school so that was a big factor as well," Beau explains.

When Beau stepped on campus at the University of Wisconsin, he was a student who happened to play football. He was admitted to the School of Business at Madison, a feat not achieved by many. Beau's attention was focused primarily on school his first three years, but he said "I didn't realize until after my junior year that [The NFL] was a possibility." His discipline learned in the classroom was transferring over to the field, and he was flourishing in both. Shifting some of his free time from
school to football, Beau was able to position himself nicely to be drafted after his senior season.

In order to do that, Beau decided to forgo his last semester at Madison to prepare for the NFL draft. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 7th round of the 2014 draft. Now entering his third year with the Eagles, Beau continues to grow into his role at nose tackle.

Beau is also taking online classes offered by Wisconsin from his home in Philadelphia. He will eventually need to return to Madison to finish up a few classes not offered online, but he will get his degree. Beau took an old-school path to the pros by focusing on his studies first, the way you're supposed to. His discipline in the classroom will pay off after his playing days are over, and the reward will be plentiful.

The 2016 Stars Hit the Ice

Stars on Ice 2016 took place on May 1st at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN. The Stars on Ice cast is made up of the best skaters in the world. There is currently 12 skaters in the show, and all of them are very accomplished. For example, Grace Gold is a United States Champion, Meryl Davis and Charlie White are both Olympic Gold Medalists, just to name a few. These skaters are passionate about pleasing the audience and doing what they love at the same time. Obviously, they are accomplished but did you know they were quite young too? Their youngest skater, Polina Edmunds is only 17. This show is incomparable as they perform to roughly 20 current pop songs and old school tunes as well. Their costumes and personality on the ice match the theme of each song-- they basically dance on the ice. The show is full of fun duos, romantic storylines, solo skaters and even some stunts such as back flips. You will be on the edge of your seat the entire show like thehesaidshesaidexperience.com said, “Every year I go to Stars on Ice wondering how it will be as good as the year before, and every year it is!” If you missed this years show, you can always catch next year's show because it will be the best yet. Don’t forget to stay until the end because during the finale they all skate together for their final song and group bow which is jaw dropping. And in case it is the cold Xcel Center that is keeping you away from the show, don’t worry it is actually quite warm in there!

Up-and-Coming App Takes Take-out to a Whole New Level

Have you ever dreamed of an app where food could be delivered to you for a low extra fee? What if you could get groceries or some Glam Doll Donuts, maybe pick up some cat food with just the push of a few buttons? As random as these requests may seem, the new, up-and-coming company Postmates can cater to any of your random requests. From PetSmart to Smashburger to Urban Outfitters, you can have almost anything delivered to you within the hour for a miniscule toll.

The company, founded in 2011, initially had food orders making up 99% of their deliveries. While food is their top reason for delivery, other goods such as retail, health, and beauty products account for 20% of Postmate’s current deliveries. The 2016 goal for the company is to grow as a whole by 20%. Future plans also entail expanding their reach from 40 to 100 markets and increasing deliveries from 1 million per month to 10 million per month.

Current market conditions are in their favor as this up and coming company seeks to become a staple app such as Uber for consumers.

Skippers Tennis Rolling

The Minnetonka Boys Tennis team beat Lake Conference rival, Eden Prairie on Friday. The Skippers, who are sitting at 4-1, played a great match, just sneaking past the Eagles. The #2 doubles team of Brent Maghan and Jacob Stork played a close match, winning 7-6, 7-5. That win keeps them undefeated. Brent and Jacob just started playing together, but their chemistry has helped them run through all of their opponents so far, making them a very exciting pair to watch. Minnetonka heads to Rochester Mayo on Friday to take on the Spartans.
